Ryan's Top 25 Films: #15 - The Visitor
The name Thomas McCarthy might not ring a bell to you. I could tell you he's an actor in such movies as Meet the Parents, Syriana, Baby Mama, The Lovely Bones, and 2012 and you'll probably say, "What did he play in those movies?" I would tell you and you would probably say, "Who?" or "Oh?" or "I think I remember him." Most likely you'll say, "Nope - still no clue who you are talking about." I'd also tell you that Thomas McCarthy is the writer and director of the films The Visitor and The Station Agent. You'll probably tell me that you've never heard of either film. As for me...I'll tell you that both films are on my top 25 of all time. The Station Agent is a bit ahead of The Visitor but that takes NOTHING away from this amazing film. As most haven't even heard of The Visitor I'll actually do a bit of a synopsis. Richard Jenkins plays Walter Vale, a widowed college professor who is really depressed and withdrawn. He's kind-of writing a book, kind-of teaching his classes, kind-of wanting to learn how to play the piano, and kind-of not really caring anymore. When he's forced to go to New York to present a paper he goes unreluctantly. He arrives at his New York apartment to find Tarek and Zainab - two "not really" squaters. The two were swindled by a man who said the apartment was free...and they are paying the con-guy rent. Jenkins kicks them out but as they couple have nowhere to go, he lets them stay. For some reason Vale begins to bond with Tarek, especially over his drum playing. While still a bit withdrawn Vale starts to come out of his shell just a bit, actually having fun for the first time in a long time. That is until the cops take in Tarek for no reason. Tarek is in the country illegally and the arrest (and subsequent non-release) affects everyone deeply. The film, like McCarthy's Station Agent, is about a man who is out of his element, meets some people who really shouldn't affect his life but does, and ends off better for it. The deep down basis of both films are the same...though they are completely different. McCarthy is a master storyteller and his style in telling this story is simply amazing. He doesn't need to have characters spurt out thousands of lines of dialogue to get his point across. The Visitor is like poetry, perhaps even like a Shakespearean play, where even though characters grow and love there always aren't happy endings for all. Jenkins is SUPERB. He was up for many awards for his role, including the Academy Award for Best Actor. Most people probably didn't recognize him or know what movie he was in that was worth an award nod. And he had to go up against the likes of Sean Penn who was superb in Milk. Which is a shame...because this performance was a blockbuster. The Visitor is a rather new film for me - I only saw it for the first time about three months ago. Since then I've watched it several times and it has taken an effect straight away. It is a brilliant piece of work...perhaps only overshadowed by McCarthy's phenom The Station Agent. MONDAY: You're willing to pay him a thousand dollars a night just for singing? Why, you can get a phonograph record of Minnie the Moocher for 75 cents. And for a buck and a quarter, you can get Minnie. Comic Film Reviews: Superman/Batman: Public EnemiesComic Film (Mini) Review: Superman/Batman: Public Enemies Reviewed by Ryan McLelland I wasn't a huge fan by any means of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness' Superman Batman series - the first arc now translated into this DVD. DC did it right this time though. Unlike the Superman/Doomsday DVD, which botched the whole storyline by not including the Justice League or the four Superman replacements, this one has a slew of DC heroes and villains all coming in to try and defeat Superman for a one billion dollar bounty. The voices are great - straight from the Batman & Superman franchises. Tim Daly back as Supes, Kevin Conroy back as Bats, Clancy Brown back as Lex Luthor...it's just awesome! And everyone is here from the Suicide Squad to Captain Atom to Power Girl! I have yet to watch the Justice League series...where LOTS of lesser tier characters are shown..but watching a direct-to-DVD release like this where it only runs about 70 minutes - it brings me joy to see these lesser tier characters make an appearance. The film itself is very simply: Superman set up by Lex. Lex shooting Kryptonite like heroin. Batman helps Supes. Everyone wants to get Superman. The film is an excuse to watch Batman and Superman team up to defeat everyone...but it really is alot of fun. Comic Film Reviews: Planet HulkComic Film Reviews: Planet Hulk Reviewed by: Ryan McLelland Taken from my post over at Ain't It Cool News While PLANET HULK may certainly be covered over in Harry's DVD section I thought to do a quick write-up for the @$$hole readers interested in how the comic translated. I'm going to cover a bit of the story so if you haven't read PLANET HULK and are going to be viewing the DVD for the first time you may want to skip on ahead. Comic Film Reviews: Tales of the Black FreighterComic Film Reviews: Tales of the Black Freighter Reviewed by Ryan McLelland
I can't even count the number of times I've read through the graphic novel Watchmen. It's very much a favorite - it was the granddaddy of all modern comic books in terms of character development, thought, and reasons heroes do what they do. Though I've read the graphic novel say...thirty times...I still never got into 'Tales of the Black Freighter'. I got that it tied into Ozymandius' story but never...really...cared. I just didn't. For me it took AWAY from the Watchmen, not adding to it. It was non-essential - it was an easy way for Alan Moore to pad the story out to 12 issues when he was originally thinking 'six'.
The release of the Watchmen movie saw no sign of the Black Freighter - though director Zack Snyder always had plans to incorprate it into the movie. His plan was to 'animate' the comic book and insert it later into an 'Ultimate Cut' of Watchmen (out NOW!). NOW - I didn't watch the Ultimate Cut...at least not yet. But I did watch Black Freighter by itself - as it came out by itself on DVD to help cash in on the "Watchmen Craze." The animation is decent. The voices...well...it's mainly 300's Gerard Butler in a quite non-superior voiceover. The 20-something odd running time of the film simply...bored me to tears just like the comic book did. I get it...I get that it ties into the story. But who fucking cares? Really? It's a fucking pirate ship story in a superhero comic which served to deconstruct the superhero genre. It's a boring add-on to an amazing story.
So why review this? Well the DVD also has the documentary 'Under the Hood', a faux-doc featuring actors from the film in character talking about Hollis Mason's book (which I'll also review later). So I got a 'two-for-one' though you miss NOTHING but watching the Black Freighter UNLESS you are a big Watchmen fan. Again - I really want to see how it all comes together with the DVD release of the Ultimate Edition - so that may be one of the next comic films I have to review. But as for Freighter? Skip it. Get the Ultimate Edition (I'm guessing) or just skip it all together. Def not worth shelling out ten bucks for. Thursday, January 21. 2010

Cop Out Theatrical Poster
With the bad Cop Out theatrical trailer now a distant memory (hopefully), Warner Bros. has shared the new Cop Out one sheet. Feels good to see Bruce Willis in John McClaine form and the great tagline 'Rock Out With Your Glock Out.' Once again I can't help feel that Warner Bros. still missed the mark on this. Thoughts? The Irish Rican Takes On Boondock Saints 2
Ryan "Irish Rican" McLelland here - I found BOONDOCK SAINTS a couple years after it had hit on video. When I was serving in the military the pilots who flew at night used to watch it incessantly before going off to fly in the helicopters and for some reason I always would walk in during Willam Dafoe's drag scene. This scene never made me want to actually sit down and watch the film. But something stuck with the pilots and the film, even calling themselves 'The Bastardos' after a throwaway line in the movie. One night they forced me to sit down and watch it and I was instantly hooked. Since then I've watched the movie once a month for the next six years. There seems to be two very different camps for BOONDOCK SAINTS: the ones who hate the movie with pure disgust vs. the ones who love the movie and scream about it to the heavens. Sure there are some who think the movie to be 'okay' but those are the people who are few and far between. Then there's director/writer Troy Duffy himself who has had his share of controversy over the years. Duffy landed the infamous movie deal with Harvey Weinstein and Miramax only to see everything he worked for get pissed away. He never got the bar bought for him, he never made the movie with Miramax, even after BOONDOCK got made it never found its way to theaters, and his group The Brood (renamed The Boondock Saints) saw their CD flop - even though it was a damn good debut album. THE BOONDOCK SAINTS has been dying for a sequel. Any fan of the film, like myself, knows that the end of the film sets up the McManus brothers to become the vengeful eye of Boston. As cult classics go the original film is a monster success - especially when you think in terms of the sequel actually being made AND released in theaters nationwide. Troy will now have his day with Boondock up on the big screen - finally have the time to sink or swim with his creation. Will his sequel hold up ten years after the first film was made? For those who aren't aware of the plot the Saints (Sean Patrick Flannery, Norman Reedus) are living the quiet life with their father (uber-killer and ultimate kickass artist Billy Connolly) in Ireland. When a copycat killer strikes a priest down in the same manner the Saints had done in their crime spree years earlier, it draws the duo right back into action. The city of Boston is left to wonder whether it is a copycat or the real thing - much to the chagrin of the three police officers who helped the Saints kill a mob boss in a court room. The Good? Clifton Collins Jr. has been in about seventy-six films this year and he's been great in every single one. There's no change here. Playing the new saint, a Mexican named Romeo, Collins brings the needed comic relief but also owns this new role. He fits so perfectly into this world that it kind of pisses me off that he wasn't in the first film. Julie Benz (the hottie from Dexter) plays hottie FBI agent Eunice Bloom - who is delicious eye-candy throughout the film. Benz replaces Willam Dafoe's character and unfortunately she is given a bit less to do in this film. When she is on-screen she surely is fun to watch. Nearly everyone comes back from the first film - even Rocco (David Della Rocco) appears in a flashback. The Indifferent? Judd Nelson and Peter Fonda. They are in the film but are really just secondary characters. You don't care about them and simply hope the Saints come in to kill them. The bad? There is A LOT of plot in this film. How can that be 'bad'? While not technically bad, the add-on of stuff that could have been kept until a third movie was added in. Of course there might not be a third movie so Troy Duffy probably felt he needed to pack it all in now. This causes the film to slow down at times but luckily it picks right up soon. The fact that this film got made is amazing in itself. The fact that this film then looks amazing, sounds even better, with impeccable acting, and a phenomenal story is sort of like bringing a Playboy model as your date to the prom then getting laid afterwards with her and her twin sister. The film just doesn't satisfy fans but will certainly be a welcome start for a whole new film career for Duffy. It certainly is the action movie of the year and I'm hard-pressed to think of anything that comes close to All Saints Day. Fans of the first film will love All Saints Day and the haters may finally like the franchise for the first time. Now all we can hope for is a trilogy. INCREDIBLE Philly Review Over At AICN!So what happens when a reviewer gets reviewed? Usually the results aren't that pretty ESPECIALLY when the reviewer is one of my own breatern. Well Professor reviewed the all new Philly #1 over at AICN today and ... well ...the review was glowing. He states he went in thinking he was going to hate this book (all thanks to me crappy writing) but came out digging the crap out of it. A choice quote? The bottom line on the comic is that it made me laugh, and I mean that in a good way. This thing is pure subversive snark and a fun little distraction from the way too serious Big Two. I mean, the idea of a drunk super-hero telling his secret origin to the bartender to get more free beer is just a funny idea and then to have the bartender disbelieve the story? Priceless. |
